In the United Kingdom, the stage management teams are generally responsible for sourcing the props and furniture for each show in addition to all of the  other normal SM duties.  To this end, I spent the majority of my time in the British Isles training to be, and working as an Assistant Stage Manger.  This means that most of my working hours were spent researching/buying/making/painting/adapting props for the show.  Depending on my stage manager and how hands-on they were, and how much time they had to spend on administrative duties, I was effectively a prop assistant/ prop master for most of the shows I have ever worked on.
