I am, that is, I identify myself as a stage manager. This has more to do with personality type and organization than with actual job duties. I am currently a member in good standing of the American Actors’ Equity Association as well as an “Honourably Withdrawn Member” of British Equity. Rehearsals make me kind of crazy, so if you have a stage management job that does not require attendance at rehearsals, let me know. Otherwise, know that when you consider me for any other positions, you are getting someone with exceedingly good organizational, communication and people skills. I know how to talk to, and have the basic working knowledge to communicate with all of the other departments as well as directors, designers, performers and stage managers in a manner that is effective and understandable to all parties. It also means I like to sort and label things. Got a prop shop that looks like a tornado just hit it? Let me at it, and you won’t even be able to recognize the space afterwards. Got a tidy and well-run backstage? I’ll fit right in; I’m a stickler for sweeping properly and putting things back where they belong.
